BUILDING INSPECTOR/PLANS EXAMINER

Reporting to the Chief Building Official, the successful candidate will exercise their powers and
perform duties under the Act and Building Code for examination of all drawings, plans,
specifications, and design data for all buildings and structures to ensure compliance with the
Building Code Act, the Ontario Building Code, related municipal by-laws and other applicable
laws. The successful candidate will also exercise powers and performs duties under the Act and
Building Code for inspection of construction at various stages to ensure compliance with the
drawings, plans and specifications certified on behalf of the Chief Building Official, and to ensure
that it is in general conformance with the Building Code Act, the Ontario Building Code and related
To be considered for this position, you must have a minimum three-year community college
Architectural Technology Diploma or equivalent, four years building construction/design
experience with a good working knowledge of the Ontario Building Code. Knowledge and
understanding of the Ontario Building Code, the Ontario Building Code Act, Ontario Plumbing
Code, Fire Code and applicable Municipal, Provincial and Federal laws is essential. Municipal
experience would be an asset.
Additional qualifications include:
• Successful completion of the qualification examinations administered by the Ministry of
Municipal Affairs and Housing including: Legal/Process, House, Small Buildings, Plumbing
House and Plumbing All Buildings. Large Building, Building Services and Building Structural
considered an asset.
• Computer skills in word processing and data management, preferably with Microsoft products
and Geographical Information Systems.
• Ability to review and comment on planning and development related applications, read and
interpret construction drawings.
• Possess and maintain a valid Class G Ontario Driver’s License along with a clean driver’s
abstract and have access to a vehicle.
Critical thinking skills along with the ability to problem solve and work under pressure are
essential. You will be required to provide excellent and efficient customer service, answer building
code enquiries and assist with the completion of applications including over the counter review.

Plumbing and Onsite Sewage Inspector
Permanent, full-time position
Wage: $25.78-$32.19 based on a 35-hour work week
Reporting to the Senior Plumbing and Sewage System Inspector, you will primarily be
responsible for performing on-site inspections of plumbing and on-site sewage systems
to ensure compliance with the Building Code Act (BCA), the Ontario Building Code (OBC)
and related legislation.
Duties and responsibilities:
• You will undertake site inspections for residential, commercial, industrial, and
institutional properties with regards to plumbing and on-site sewage systems.
• You will review construction plans, specifications, and reports from designers,
engineers and architects to establish compliance with the OBC, municipal by-laws
• You will issue correspondence, field reports, orders, and respond to inquiries
regarding plumbing and septic systems, the Ontario Building Code, and other
pertinent legislative requirements.
• You will liaise and maintain good public relations with department clientele
including architects, engineers, lawyers, the public, other departments, and

Qualifications, skills and knowledge:
• You have completed a three-year post-secondary diploma/degree in Civil
Engineering Technology, or have relevant plumbing experience or a Certificate of
Qualification in plumbing.
• You are provincially qualified and registered with the Ministry of Municipal
Affairs and Housing in accordance with the Building Code Act or eligible for an
Ontario Building Officials Association (OBOA) Internship in the following:
➢ General Legal
➢ Plumbing All Buildings
➢ On-site Sewage Systems
• You have a Certified Plumbing Systems Inspector (CPSI) designation or Certified
Building Code Official (CBCO) designation or are willing to obtain designation.
• You have excellent interpersonal, project/time management, analytical,
communications, problem solving, record keeping, and report writing skills.
• You must have a valid Class G driver’s license with a clean abstract. A driver’s
abstract must be submitted with your resume.
