Describe methods of repairing leaks on range boilers

A very good method of plugging leaks on range boilers is shown in A, Fig. 75. The leak is made large and a heavy bur forced into the boiler by means of a tapered punch. This bur will be sufficiently heavy to allow it to be tapped out and plugged. B also shows a very effective method for repairing range boiler leaks. The leak should first be reamed out large enough to allow a small bolt to pass through the hole. A brass washer and rubber gasket should be placed on the bolt so that they will not work off, and the bolt attached to a string and dropped down through one of the top boiler openings, as shown in the illustration. With a small wire hook inserted through the hole which has been reamed out, draw the lower end of the string through the hole. By this means the bolt with its washer and gasket can be drawn through. The nut should then be screwed on and the gasket brought up tight against the inside of the boiler. A repair thus made, with the pressure helping to make a tight joint, is more effective then it would be if the repair was made outside.

This was taken from the book "Questions and Answers on the Practice and Theory of Sanitary Plumbing, Volume II, Hot Water Supply and Circulation ", which was published in 1919.
