About Us

The Ontario Plumbing Inspectors Association Inc. (OPIA) is a non profit organization dedicated to protecting the health and well being of the Province of Ontario through safe plumbing. Founded in 1920, our primary purpose is to promote the improvement of plumbing standards to insure protection of the environment, promote the advancement of knowledge concerning the safe installation of plumbing and to insure safe and adequate potable water systems in the Province of Ontario. We presently have over 800 members made up of Plumbing and Building Inspectors, Plumbing and Building Contractors, plumbers and apprentices, Engineers, Engineering technicians, Drain Contractors, manufacturers and others interested in the promotion of safe plumbing practices. To serve our members better, the OPIA maintains a close liaison with the Ontario Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing and their Code Advisors. The OPIA maintains a close relationship with many other associations such as the Mechanical Contractors Association of Ontario, the Canadian Institute of Plumbing and Heating, the World Plumbing Council, the United Association of Journeymen and Apprentices of the Plumbing and Pipe Fitting Industry of the United States and Canada, the Ontario Concrete and Drain Contractors Association and the Ontario Plumbing Inspectors Sponsors Organization.

We distribute a bi-monthly Bulletin concentrating on code interpretations and updates, as well as new products and methods entering the plumbing trade. Our Code Technical Committee can now be reached through this Web Page by following the Code Technical link.

Each September we have our Annual Meeting and Educational Seminar located at different locations throughout Ontario, with the 2008 site being Mississauga. The OPIA also offers day and night school courses pertaining to plumbing and periodically holds Branch meetings throughout Ontario. Our courses are designed for both inspectors, plumbers and apprentices.

The OPIA administers a Reciprocal Licencing program, a Provincial Standard Master Plumber Examination and a Provincial Standard Drain Contractor Examination for the benefit of Municipalities engaged in a Master Plumber and Drain Contractor licencing program.

Our Bulletin Editor is always glad to receive any plumbing related information. Bookmark this site and check back often as we add more information continuously. If there is anything that you would like to see added please E-mail the OPIA and let us know, your comments are important to us.
